Overview of the Redmond FM600 planetary mixer

09.10.2024 07:49

The manufacturer claims that the Redmond FM600 planetary mixer is a modern multifunctional device, meaning that it can knead, mix and whip. However, we usually understand multifunctionality differently: for example, when one device combines the functions of a mixer, juicer, grater or even a meat grinder, and even better — when the device combines the capabilities of an oven, bread maker or microwave. From our point of view, the Redmond FM600 planetary mixer is a device with one main task: to perform the functions of a mixer, without additional features such as a blender or steamer.

Let's see how the Redmond FM600 planetary mixer copes with its main and primary function or functions: kneading, mixing and whipping.

Equipment

The Redmond FM600 planetary mixer was delivered in two boxes: the outer one was made of durable technical cardboard, and inside was the branded packaging made of thick black cardboard. It depicts the device itself and indicates the key technical characteristics.

The planetary mixer and all parts of the device are placed in separate plastic bags and fixed in the box with foam inserts.

Opening the box, we found:

  • planetary mixer
  • bowl with lid
  • dough kneading attachment
  • mixing attachment
  • whipping attachment
  • service book, recipe book, operating manual

At first glance

The planetary mixer looks stylish and elegant: black color combined with metal elements and smooth lines. The device is quite large and heavy — about 9 kg, so it will need a separate place on the kitchen surface.

There is a release lever on the side panel on the right.

When you press the release lever, the mixer's hinged part rises up. We recommend holding the hinged head with your hand, as the device may bounce a little during the process.

On the front panel we see a round speed and time controller.

On the underside of the folding part there is a metal shaft for attaching attachments, equipped with a transverse pin and a spring. The installation of attachments is simple and intuitive: you need to align the groove on the attachment with the pin on the shaft, insert it until it stops and turn it clockwise.

On the back of the unit there is a mount for the folding head, ventilation holes to prevent the motor from overheating, and an outlet for the electrical cord.

On the bottom panel we see five rubber feet with suction cups, which, it must be said, are quite securely fixed on any surface, as well as a plate with technical information about the device.

The set includes a five-liter stainless steel bowl and a transparent plastic lid, which prevents products from flying all over the room when using the mixer.

Three attachments (from left to right):

  • paddle attachment for mixing,
  • hook for kneading dough,
  • whisk for whipping.

All attachments are made of metal: the paddle and hook are made of silumin, and the whisk has a silumin base with steel rods.

At first glance, we liked the Redmond FM600 planetary mixer: a stylish, stable device that shouldn’t cause any problems in operation.

Instructions

The operating manual is presented in the form of a 16-page brochure in Russian and Kazakh languages.

The document contains a detailed description of the device with diagrams of the device, assembly and use procedures, as well as information on the safe operation, cleaning and maintenance of the device.

Warning: there are obvious errors in the recipe book, probably due to careless work with the layout. For example, the recipe for cottage cheese and orange cream calls for 340 g of chicken fillet and 300 g of champignons, which is clearly not suitable for a dessert. And the recipe for shortbread cookies contains 750 g of potatoes and ingredients more suitable for potato pancakes than cookies.

Operation

Before first use, wipe the device body with a damp cloth and wash all removable parts.

The kit includes three attachments:

NozzlePurpose
for whipping (whisk attachment)cream, eggs, airy creams, mousses, various desserts
for mixing (paddle attachment)creams, glazes, liquid fillings and sauces
for kneading dough (hook attachment)thick yeast dough

Installing the bowl and attachments is straightforward — the bowl is easily fixed without the need to spend a long time adjusting it to the required grooves. The device stands firmly on the table thanks to the suction cups, but when mixing unleavened dough for noodles, the mixer jumped slightly, and we had to support it with our hand. The device moves without difficulty — the suction cups easily come off the surface.

We almost never used the protective cover for the bowl, as it was not necessary, probably because we did not load large volumes of ingredients into the bowl.

The mixer can work continuously for up to 15 minutes, after which it is recommended to take a 30-minute break. However, since we used small volumes of products, it managed to cope with the tasks before the end of this time.

It turned out to be convenient to work with the Redmond FM600 planetary mixer: it is easy to assemble and disassemble, and it performs its functions perfectly. The only thing to consider is its size and weight: the device is quite large and requires a separate place in the kitchen.

Care

Maintenance of the device is standard: removable parts are recommended to be washed under running water with a neutral detergent, avoiding abrasive and aggressive chemical compounds. Only the mixer bowl can be washed in the dishwasher. The body should be wiped first with a damp cloth and then with a dry cloth.

Our measurements

The maximum power of the device recorded during the entire period of use was only 167 W.

The mixer works quite quietly and does not cause discomfort — when it is turned on, you can calmly communicate without raising your voice.

Practice tests

Homemade pasta

A planetary mixer is an indispensable assistant when preparing such a dish. Just imagine how much time you would have to spend kneading unleavened dough by hand.

Ingredients:

  • 300 g flour
  • 3 eggs
  • a pinch of salt

We added all the ingredients to the mixer bowl, installed the hook attachment and started the process.

We took a photo of the device in operation in the middle of the process — simply because it looks beautiful:

After 12 minutes of running the mixer at the second speed, we got this dough:

All the ingredients were mixed well, and the dough had a great structure and density.

We divided it into three parts and began to roll each one separately, trying to achieve a thinness. We were aiming for a thickness of 1 mm, but it seems that we did not quite succeed (for this you need a pasta machine).

Real housewives, of course, cut pasta or noodles into the thinnest strips without difficulty, but we sprinkled the dough with flour, rolled it into a roll and cut it into relatively thin circles.

Then each circle was straightened out and placed in a bowl.

They say that fresh pasta can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days, but we didn’t keep it for long and immediately threw it into a pot of boiling salted water. Fresh pasta only needs to be boiled for 2 minutes, and that’s what we did.

After that, we transferred the pasta to a plate, added pesto and sprinkled parmesan on top. It turned out magical!

Cinnamon buns

Ingredients:

  • flour — 500-550 g
  • softened butter — 200 g (we decided to replace margarine with butter)
  • dry yeast — 2.5 tsp
  • sugar — 2 tbsp
  • salt — 0.5 tsp
  • milk — 250 ml

First, we poured the flour and softened butter into the mixer bowl, installed the paddle attachment and turned it on at speed 2. After 3 minutes of work, we were not satisfied with the result — the butter did not mix well with the flour. We collected the flour from the sides of the bowl, mixed it with a spoon and started the mixer again at speed 2 for another 3 minutes. The result you see in the photo on the right did not completely satisfy us either, but since this was not the final stage of working with the test, we decided to stop there.

Pour yeast dissolved in warm milk into the dough, turn on the same second speed and start the mixer.

After five minutes we had a well-structured and mixed dough.

We kneaded the dough with our hands, formed a lump out of it and put it in the fridge. There are different recommendations on the Internet: you can leave the dough overnight, for four hours, and some even claim that you can keep it in the fridge for a month. They say that the longer the dough sits, the tastier it is. We decided to leave it in the fridge for an hour.

We took the dough out of the fridge, rolled it out and lightly greased it with vegetable oil. Then we sprinkled sugar so that it would stick to the dough, added a little cinnamon and rolled the buns.

We put it in the oven at 180 degrees and after 25 minutes we got a delicious result.

Puree

Making mashed potatoes is quite simple. We boiled the potatoes until soft, then placed them in a mixer and added a little oil. We installed the paddle attachment and turned on the device at speed 2. In a minute, we had mashed potatoes (pictured on the right).

Then we added the milk and turned the mixer on again: first on speed 2 for 3 minutes, then on speed 3 for another 2 minutes. The puree turned out pretty good, although there were still some small pieces of potato in it.

And then we put the puree on a plate, added herring (it’s hard to resist a classic), sprinkled it with green onions and ate it.

Charlotte

The recipe for charlotte was in that same lost notebook, but, fortunately, we remembered it by heart:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • apples to taste

First, we mixed the eggs with sugar in a mixer bowl, installing the whisk attachment and selecting speed 4. After 2 minutes, we decided that the eggs were sufficiently mixed with sugar.Charlotte

Next we added a cup of flour and turned on the mixer at the same 4th speed. As you can see in the photo on the right, some of the flour remained on the walls of the bowl:

Obviously, after a couple of minutes we stopped the mixer, shook the flour into the main dough, and started the machine again to mix everything.

We were satisfied with the result, and then we greased the mold with oil, sprinkled it with semolina, cut and placed apples in the mold and filled them with the resulting dough:

We put it in the oven for about 40 minutes, took it out, cut it up and ate it.

Curd muffins

This time we decided not to turn to grandma's recipes, but to the recipe book that came with the Redmond FM600 planetary mixer.

Ingredients:

  • premium flour — 80 g
  • cottage cheese — 100 g
  • sour cream — 30 ml
  • egg — 1 pc.
  • butter — 20 g
  • sugar — 100 g
  • salt — 2 g
  • baking powder — 4 g

Interestingly, the recipe from the book is designed for exactly 6 muffins. If you want to make more, increase the amount of ingredients accordingly.

We added all the ingredients to a bowl, installed the paddle attachment and turned on the mixer at speed 3, as indicated in the recipe.

After 3 minutes, we had a completely mixed dough. However, we did not use regular store-bought cottage cheese, but rather sheet cottage cheese bought at the market. Some recipes we saw online advised to rub the cottage cheese through a sieve, but we decided that a planetary mixer would cope with this task. As a result, as in the case of mashed potatoes, there were some small pieces of cottage cheese left in the dough that were not completely mixed.

We did not strive for an ideal result, since this is not critical for muffins.

We put the dough into a silicone mold, having previously greased it with vegetable oil, and sent the future cupcakes into the oven at 170 degrees for 25 minutes (which is also written in the recipe).

After 25 minutes we got out delicious and aromatic muffins, in which, by the way, the pieces of cottage cheese had completely dissolved.

Conclusions

The Redmond FM600 planetary mixer is a stylish and attractive device that successfully performs all the declared functions. We tested all three attachments included in the kit (hook, spatula and whisk) and used them to prepare various types of dough: unleavened, yeast and biscuit. We were completely satisfied with the results. With this device, you can bake bread, prepare both sweet and savory pastries, and also please your loved ones with a variety of desserts.

The only thing the mixer didn't do a great job with was mashed potatoes and dough with cottage cheese: the remaining lumps after mixing were a bit of a letdown. However, this mixer is great for mixing and kneading dough, as well as making sauces and other dishes with more uniform ingredients.

Pros:

  • Ease of use and maintenance
  • Ease of control
  • Low noise level
  • Copes well with dough preparation

Cons:

  • Does not always cope with grinding medium-hard products
