Review of spice mills Rawmid Modern RMG-01

Pepper was not only in the soup, but also in the air. Even the Duchess sneezed incessantly, and the child in her arms alternately sneezed and screamed shrilly. Only the Cook and the big cat, who was sitting by the stove and smiling from ear to ear, did not sneeze.

L. Carroll. «Alice in Wonderland»

A friend of ours recently spoke glowingly about electric grinders, emphasizing that freshly ground black pepper is far superior in flavor and aroma to commercially ground black pepper. After all, from the moment of grinding, the finished pepper begins to lose its quality, and no one knows how much time it spent in the warehouse and store before getting to you. He also noted that without an electric grinder, he would probably only use ready-made ground pepper from the store, since he does not have the time to use a regular grinder, and he does not have enough hands.

We fully support our friend's opinion: freshly ground pepper and pepper from a bag are completely different things. When we ground coriander in a mill, its aroma filled the kitchen for two hours. In addition, the electric grinder is very convenient because it can be used with one hand.

Equipment

The mills came to us in beautiful blue cardboard boxes with a photograph of the mill and an indication of the technical characteristics and features of the device.

Having opened the box, we found the following packed in foam:

  • the mill itself
  • 3 spice containers
  • storage stand
  • Type-C wire
  • user manual and warranty

At first sight

Mills are beautiful and stylish appliances that will undoubtedly decorate any kitchen.

The mill itself is made of plastic that is pleasant to the touch, and the top of the device is made in such a way that it is comfortable to hold in your hands and press the control button.

At the top of the device there is a hole for connecting a USB cable. The hole itself is closed with a plastic plug that is easy to open and close.

Inside the bottom of the mill body there is a clamp for attaching a container for spices:

The mill comes with three containers for spices, which is certainly convenient, as it allows you to quickly change seasonings without the need for pouring. At the bottom of each spice container there is a pin (at the top in the photo) that secures the container in the clamp of the mill body.

At the top of the spice container there is an adjustment knob with which you can change the degree of grinding.

The lid of the spice container can be unscrewed and you can see the central axis mount and the spring on one side, and a small fragment of the internal millstone on the other.

The spice container itself is made of transparent plastic, and thus you can always see what kind of spice is poured into the jar.

The spice container is very easy to insert into the mill body: you just need to align the mill with the container and lower the device down. To remove the container, simply pull it down. Everything is very simple.

The device is also equipped with a plastic stand designed for three containers for spices.

What’s nice is that the mill itself can be installed in the same stand with a container already attached to it, which makes it easier to work with the most commonly used seasonings.

Instructions

The instructions for the device are printed on thick glossy paper and consist of 16 pages. The manual traditionally contains a description of the device, features of its operation, technical characteristics and other useful information.

The instructions also include pictures that make it easier to read and understand how the device operates.

Management

Operating the mill is very simple: just press a button and the device starts working. It’s convenient that all this can be done with one hand, which greatly simplifies the cooking process.

Grinding adjustment is carried out using the adjustment knob. When turning the knob clockwise, the grind thickness decreases, and when turning it counterclockwise, it increases. This is shown schematically next to arrows using larger and smaller circles.

Exploitation

There were no problems using the mill, with the exception of one unpleasant incident with Himalayan salt, which is described in detail in the “Practical tests” section. Overall, the device works great: the charge holds well and the noise is low.

However, there are two points that raise doubts.

The first is attaching the seasoning containers to the main body. The attachment clamp doesn't seem very secure. During use, the jars periodically fall out, and there is a feeling that the clamp will not last long.

The second is adjusting the degree of grinding. Since the adjustment knob of the spice container is on the same axis as the pin, when the knob is rotated, the axis also rotates, which interferes with adjustment. To adjust the degree of grinding, you need to hold the top of the jar with the pin with your hand.

Unfortunately, we were not able to photograph the spice container so that everything was clear. For illustration, we attach: on the left is the upper part of the jar with a pin, on the right is the lower part of the jar with an adjustment handle.

We would also call the adjustment of the grinding degree largely intuitive. Below is a photo where the adjustment knob is turned for fine grinding:

And there are no problems or difficulties here.

Below is a photo where the adjustment knob is turned to the coarsest grinding level:

It’s difficult to find a balance here: if you turn the handle a little harder, the structure (which has a spring inside) scatters throughout the kitchen, making it difficult to find parts.

Care

The instructions do not contain information on how to care for the mill, so we rely on common sense. Spice jars can be washed with a soft sponge and detergent, and the mill body can be wiped with a damp and then dry cloth. Be careful not to scratch the surface or use abrasive or caustic cleaners. We do not recommend washing any part of the appliance in the dishwasher.

Practice tests

During the practical tests, our main goal was to check how well the device copes with grinding spices, and also to find out how uniform the grinding would be.

Pink Himalayan salt

We started testing the mill with pink Himalayan salt. We were apprehensive at first, but after seeing salt grinding in the manufacturer's video review, we decided to give it a try.

The result of our test is visible in the photo below. Despite honest attempts to rotate the adjustment knob, there was no difference in the thickness of the grind: the grind remained fine. We decided that this was the way it should be, and moved on to the next test — a mixture of peppers.

However, when testing the mill on a mixture of peppers (see the second test), we found that there was still a difference in the grind size. After carefully examining the spice container, we noticed that the millstones of the mill were a little stuck. We disassembled the mill, pulled out the millstones, put the mill back together and started it up again.

The result of our actions is visible in the photo:

Note that the material from which the pin on which the millstone is held is made, most likely ceramic, is not so fragile.

Result: good.

Pepper mixture

We took the pepper mixture and poured it into the spice container. 20 g of pepper took up about half a jar, so about 40 g would fit in a whole container.

We turned the adjustment knob again to achieve different grind thicknesses, and this time we got it. In the photo below from left to right: fine, medium and coarse grind. To complete the picture, we added peppercorns to the dish (next to the fine grind) to make the result more noticeable.

Result: excellent.

Provencal herbs

Having tested the mill on pepper and salt, for the next test we chose a set of Provençal herbs: rosemary, basil, sage, thyme, garden savory, oregano and marjoram. As with the peppers, 20g of herbes de Provence filled about half the container.

Due to the fact that herbs de Provence themselves are quite fine, the coarse grind (far right) differs little from their original consistency. With a medium grind (photo in the center) and a fine grind (far left), the difference is more visible. At the top right of the fine grind are the herbs in their original form.

Coriander

20 g of coriander took about the same half of the jar.

The result of the mill's operation is shown in the photo below. From left to right: fine grind, medium grind, coarse grind. Unground coriander seeds — just above fine grinding.

Result: excellent.

conclusions

As we mentioned at the beginning of our review, an electric grinder is a real convenience. In just a few seconds, it will grind peppers, spices and herbs, filling your kitchen with a magical aroma that will make your mouth water.

It is impossible not to note the ease of use: the mill is easy to hold with one hand, just press the button, and aromatic spices will add a refined taste to your dish.

Pros:

  • Ease of use
  • Always have freshly ground spices on hand
  • three spice jars

Minuses:

  • We do not recommend grinding products harder than black pepper
  • inaccuracy in adjusting the grinding degree
