On a hot summer day, a man named Dimitrios Katsikas from Larisa, Greece, arrives in the land of fairy chimneys. This young man wants to follow the traces of his grandfathers and grandmothers who were forced to migrate from these lands years ago, and to visit these beautiful places instead of his relatives who could not return. Coincidences bring him together with Aziz Güzelgöz, nicknamed “Father”, one of the beloved figures of the region. These two young people of the same age quickly bond. When Dimitrios becomes a guest at Aziz’s house, he meets an incredible man in this enchanting land. Aziz’s father is Mustafa Güzelgöz; also known as the Librarian with a Donkey.
He was given this name because he used to carry books to the people of more than thirty villages by donkey while he was managing the library in Ürgüp. Mustafa Güzelgöz struggled for years so that everyone, especially women, would read books.
The bridge of love between Dimitrios and the Librarian with a Donkey grows stronger and more powerful as they travel the region together. In the meantime, Aziz and Dimitrios, who are blood brothers, have the idea of making Ürgüp and Larisa “sister cities.” But this will not be that easy...
In this last novel of Fakir Baykurt, which he wrote while he was sick, using all the possibilities of classical narration, until he was able to, and even until he ran out of strength, feelings such as love, brotherhood, determination, and courage once again embrace the reader.
