The demand for irrigators is constantly growing, especially in families with small or several children. It is easier to convince a child of the importance of oral hygiene if the device is not only functional, but also attractive in appearance. The Polaris PWF 2004UV Smart Display wireless stationary irrigator had to show its capabilities to both adults and children during testing.

Equipment

The Polaris PWF 2004UV Smart Display irrigator came for testing in a stylish branded white box. The box cover shows the brand name, the silhouette of the device and the certification mark. The side panels contain the brand name, and on the back panel you can find the full model name and a schematic representation of the main advantages: 2 years warranty, battery operation, ceramic filter, 10 operating modes, two types of pulsation, number of attachments, 800 ml tank and bag for storage and transportation.

In addition, the box lists the main characteristics and details of the manufacturer and importer in four languages.

The lid is fixed with built-in magnets, and inside the device is packed in a transport bag with compartments for each part. The bag closes with a zipper and has holders for reliable fixation of the irrigator.

In total the kit includes:

  • irrigator
  • replaceable standard nozzles — 3 pcs.
  • replaceable tongue tip — 2 pcs.
  • orthodontic attachment
  • periodontal tip
  • plaque removal nozzle
  • ceramic water filter
  • USB cable
  • charging adapter
  • travel case
  • manual

The travel case has a comfortable handle, which made a lasting impression on the youngest member of the family. It’s really much more convenient to transport the device to the dacha or take it with you on a trip with such a suitcase.

At first sight

Among other things, we tested children's impressions of the device, because teaching a six-year-old child about oral hygiene is not an easy task. But when the child spoke with delight about the “suitcase,” part of the problem was solved by itself.

The Polaris PWF 2004UV Smart Display also makes an excellent impression with its appearance: a minimalist design, a compact rectangular shape, a round display and a neat door on the front panel where you can store attachments.

On the right side panel there are places for attaching a hose and a nozzle holder with a magnetic lock. The holder itself is compact and easily fits in the palm of both an adult and a child. The meter-long hose is assembled into a neat spring around the base of the mount. Before installation, the nozzle moves apart and is fixed during installation, thanks to its ability to rotate 360 degrees.

The holder has two silver buttons: the first is for installing the attachment, the second is the stop/pause switch. The attachments are inserted into a visible connector, and they are fixed by pressing the first button.

At the bottom of the device there are four rubber feet that perfectly “stick” to the sink, providing the irrigator with additional stability. The device can be easily removed with a little effort. Also on the bottom are technical data and a barcode.

The transparent water tank is removed separately and has its own white plastic lid. A ceramic filter is installed inside the tank. The installation process is very simple:

  1. Unpack the filter and wash it in warm boiled water.
  2. Remove the reservoir cover and install the filter cylinder in the special place by simply inserting it into the connector.

Volume marks are marked on the transparent wall of the tank: a minimum of 200 ml (enough for one person), then 400 ml, 600 ml and a maximum of 800 ml. Thanks to the rectangular shape of the tank and the ease of its removal and installation, caring for it is not difficult.

At the back you can see a transparent tank with a filter, and at the bottom there is a charging connector. Polaris PWF 2004UV Smart Display is charged via a USB cable from a laptop, computer or power bank; The kit also includes an adapter for the socket. The manufacturer promises a full charge in 3-4 hours, which we confirm: for the first charge it took us a little more than 3 hours.

According to the manufacturer, a full charge should last for 330 minutes when using the device twice a day. We used the irrigator much more intensively during tests, but after a week we were still unable to completely discharge it.

The device has 8 attachments: 3 replaceable standard attachments, 2 replaceable ones for cleaning the tongue, one orthodontic (for cleaning braces, bridges and crowns), one periodontal (for cleaning the gingival margin and pockets, as well as treating dentures) and one for removing plaque (with bristles) ). The attachments are conveniently stored in special holders in the door. After the irrigator has completed its work, the UV lamp in this compartment automatically turns on and turns off after 5 minutes. For ease of use, replaceable attachments differ in the color of the rim or material.

We will talk about the controls separately, but for now we note that the front panel has an LCD display, which we press to turn it on. Control is carried out by smooth turns clockwise, while all actions are displayed on the display screen, including the timer. Each selected operating mode automatically turns off after 2 minutes.

Instructions

The instruction manual is a neat brochure, traditional for Polaris, made in two languages: Russian and Kazakh. It contains 30 pages. It’s nice that if you need or lose a document, you can download it again from the site.

The title page contains an outline of the irrigator, brand name, full model name and QR code. Inside the brochure you will find general information, safety instructions, equipment, a diagram of the device, a description of the attachments and their use, preparation for use, recommendations for storage and cleaning, as well as a description of the warranty conditions and a warranty card.

In addition, the device comes with a leaflet with instructions for installing and cleaning the filter, as well as a leaflet “Care of the irrigator in questions and answers.”

Control

Now let's return to the LCD display. To turn on the irrigator, you need to press it firmly, officially this is called “long press for 1 second.”

A scale appears on the screen with 10 water pressure modes from 0 to 10. The display also shows an action timer, a charge indicator and an indication of the pulsation mode — Floss (cleaning) or Massage (massage).

Water pressure modes are switched by rotating the outer LCD ring clockwise or counterclockwise to increase or decrease water flow. The movements are smooth, and as the pressure increases, the sound of the device increases. If a child indulges in speed instead of standard brushing, you can immediately hear it. After 2 minutes, any selected mode will automatically turn off. To force a shutdown, first return the dial to level “0” and then press the display again, this time for 3 seconds.

As for operating modes, Floss is automatically activated upon startup. You can switch the mode again by briefly pressing the display until you hear a characteristic click.

The charge level indicator consists of 4 bars (25%, 50%, 75% and 100% battery charge). The built-in battery is discharged if the bars do not light up.

Using the “start/pause” button on the handle of the irrigator, you can temporarily stop the water supply, and the water pressure mode will be reset to position “1”.

Exploitation

Traditionally, we first rinse the device and filter, assemble the irrigator, charge it, select a place for installation and study the instructions.

It is important to discuss the use of an irrigator with your dentist, who can provide helpful recommendations. For beginners, it is better to start with a gentle regime. The device does not harm the gums and teeth, but does require some getting used to. Based on the doctor’s recommendations and your goals, choose the appropriate attachment and get to work.

It is also important to fill the reservoir with clean, warm water without additives, especially oils. The water should be comfortable for you, the same as you use to rinse your mouth. Do not leave water in the reservoir after use and do not use yesterday's water the next time you use it. Simply remove the lid, drain the remaining water, rinse the tank and refill it before use.

Now remove the handle (holder) of the irrigator from the body and direct the nozzle into the sink or bathtub. We turn on the device by long pressing the LCD display, hold down the button on the holder, rotate the outer ring to select a mode (cleaning or massage), take a comfortable position, place the nozzle in your mouth and release the button on the handle — the work begins.

We use the waterpik differently: some people lean forward over the sink more, others less. Dexterity comes quickly, although sometimes accompanied by negligence. We determine the distance from the nozzle to the teeth ourselves, focusing on comfort. In case of inflammation, in the area of braces and between teeth, you should be careful.

The six-year-old child quickly mastered the process; we chose a regimen for him in accordance with the doctor’s recommendations. There were no problems with use, but supervision was required, since children have a rich imagination and a desire to use the device inappropriately. The standard two minutes seemed too long to the children, and a steady interest in repeating the procedure remained only the first time. But even this is an impressive result for a child who usually avoids dental hygiene.

Polaris PWF 2004UV is easy to carry from place to place, it stands steadily on a flat surface. Stationary devices are larger than portable ones, so this irrigator will require a small but specific space. The length of the hose is 1 meter, which is quite enough for comfortable use of the device.

The irrigator is equipped with a ceramic filter, designed to last 8-9 months when using a full tank (800 ml) twice a day. The manufacturer recommends cleaning the filter at least once during this period.

The attachments are conveniently stored in a compartment on the door and processed with a lamp there. They can be washed in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution or a 1% chlorhexidine solution. It should be remembered that the period of use of the nozzles specified by the manufacturer is 6 months, after which it is better to replace them with new ones to maintain hygiene.

A separate bonus is the “suitcase” into which the device can easily and conveniently fit. This allows you to easily transport it on trips, to the country house or even to a picnic. This travel case delights not only children, but also adults.

Care

The white surface of Polaris PWF 2004UV may have small splash stains that can be easily removed with a damp cloth. The tank is very easy to clean: just remove it, open the lid and rinse as desired.

As for the attachments, it is also recommended to rinse them after each use. Sometimes both children and adults forget about this, so from time to time the nozzles can be placed in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution or 1% chlorhexidine solution.

To clean the filter, just remove it and immerse it in a 6% solution of table vinegar for a while — 10 minutes is enough. Then the filter should be removed, shaken, rinsed, and it is ready for use again.

If you plan to store the irrigator for a long time, the filter and the device itself must be thoroughly dried and wiped. The manufacturer recommends regularly rinsing the tank before each use with plain water to prevent the formation of scale, which the filter can handle.

Do not add suspensions, decoctions, alcohol and saline solutions or mouthwashes to the water. Operating the device without water may damage it.

Our measurements

Polaris PWF 2004UV has a low noise level, reaching up to 64 dB at maximum pressure. Power consumption during charging is less than 4 W.

The reservoir holds 800 ml of water, which is enough to operate the device, depending on the selected mode, from about 6 minutes to 2 and a half.

Below are the results of our measurements in the table:

Working hoursOperating time with a full tank
Floss, 2nd speed5 minutes 23 seconds
Floss, 6th speed3 minutes 18 seconds
Floss, 10th speed2 minutes 16 seconds
Massage, 2nd speed5 minutes 52 seconds
Massage, 6th speed4 minutes 31 seconds
Massage, 10th speed3 minutes 51 seconds
