Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan reflects the events that took place during the Cultural Revolution, which turned all the values of Chinese society upside down, through the experiences of a family with nine children. From the moment the children are born to the time they grow up, they are the direct or indirect subjects or witnesses of each of the events in that process. One of the most important characters in the novel is the mother of those children.
Mo Yan explains how she wrote the book and created the mother character as follows:
“I used my mother’s personal experiences without hesitation while writing the novel; however, the emotional experiences of the mother in the book are fictional and based on the experiences of many mothers in Gaomi Northeast District. In the introduction of the book, I say, I dedicate this book to my mother’s spirit; but I actually dedicate this book to all mothers in the world; just as I, with my arrogant and wild ambition, see that tiny Gaomi Northeast District as a microcosm of China and the world.”
