Equipment

The Redmond HS1715 straightener comes in a compact rectangular cardboard box in a dusty pink shade. The front side of the package shows the device itself, as well as the company logo and model name.

On the sides of the box there are pictograms indicating the main advantages of the straightener. On the back side there are data about the manufacturer and technical characteristics of the device. Inside the package there is the styler itself in a plastic bag and instructions with a warranty card.

At first sight

The straightener has a classic design, but looks fresh and attractive. The body is made of pleasant to the touch white matte plastic with copper inserts. The inner surface and working plates are decorated in a muted golden color.

The device does not look cheap; all body elements are carefully fitted, and no defects were found during visual inspection.

The styler fits comfortably in the hand, has standard dimensions and is lightweight. The length of the body to the place where the cord is attached is 29.5 cm, the width is 3.2 cm, and the height is 3.5 cm. The weight without the cord is only 260 g.

On the top outer panel, the brand logo is painted in gold, and below is a control panel with LED indicators and a single mechanical button, slightly recessed into the body.

On the bottom panel there is an easily removable sticker with technical specifications.

At the end of the straightener, the plastic has a volumetric convex pattern, which allows you to comfortably hold the device with your fingers during straightening. This pattern improves adhesion to the skin and reduces contact with the heated plastic.

The size of the floating plates with a ceramic coating is 2.4 x 10 cm.

The floating plate mount in the styler acts as a shock absorber, reducing the risk of hair damage when the panels are over-compressed. This contributes to more delicate straightening or curling of strands when changing the angle of the device.

On the inside of the lower part of the styler, in a small protrusion, there is an «ion generator».

For compact storage, the handle is equipped with a plate lock in the closed position.

The 1.9 m long power cable has a 360° rotating mount and is protected from kinks by a thick rubber sheath.

Instructions

The rectifier manual is presented in the form of a small 23-page brochure, printed on high-quality paper and designed in the Redmond corporate style.

Information about the styler's structure, its operation and safety precautions is presented in detail and consistently.

Control

Redmond HS1715 is controlled by one button. When you press and hold the button for the first time, the device turns on and automatically starts heating up to 200 °C. Short presses on the button allow you to switch between temperature modes, of which there are five: 140/160/180/200/230 °C. To turn off the device, you need to press and hold the button again.

When selecting a temperature mode, the scale is illuminated by blue LEDs. While the device is heating up, the indicator opposite the selected temperature flashes, and when the desired temperature is reached, it lights up steadily.

If the straightener is left unused, it will automatically turn off after 60 minutes.

Exploitation

Before use, remove the packaging material, unwind the cord and connect the straightener to the network. After pressing the power button, you can select the temperature mode.

The manufacturer recommends the following temperature modes:

140 °Cfor colored and fine hair
160—180 °Cfor normal and healthy
180—200 °Cfor the naughty and tough
230 °Cfor very curly and porous hair

The straightener should only be used on clean, dry and thoroughly combed hair. It is not recommended to apply fixing products before straightening. The principle of operation is simple: you need to firmly clamp the strand with heated plates and slowly move it from the roots to the ends.

We tested the device on freshly washed and naturally dried thick hair 40-45 cm long, which is slightly curly by nature. It took about 15 minutes on average to style such hair at a temperature of 200 °C. We went over each strand once or twice. The hair was quickly smoothed out, became silky, shiny and did not become electrified. The shock-absorbing plates prevented creases, and the working plates were absolutely smooth, sliding freely and did not catch the hair, even with a strong clamp.

The rounded edges of the plates allow you not only to straighten, but also to curl strands or twist the ends if you simultaneously twist the strand while pulling.

The disadvantages include the strong heating of the housing in the areas where the plates are located — at temperatures above 160 °C, contact with the plastic in these areas becomes unpleasant. The tips with a convex pattern make the situation a little easier, allowing you to press them with your fingers for a short time. As a result, it is best to clamp the plates with a cold handle, which, as practice has shown, is quite sufficient.

Otherwise, the straightener lived up to expectations. Among the convenient features are the plate lock in the closed position and the 360 ° rotating cord, which completely eliminates its twisting during use.

Care

Recommendations for the care of the straightener are standard for such devices. It must not be immersed in water or cleaned with abrasive or chemically aggressive agents. Regularly wipe the plates and body with a damp cloth, and then dry, after the device is disconnected from the network and has completely cooled down.

Our measurements

The device heats up to the minimum temperature (140 °C) in 34 seconds, and to the maximum (230 °C) in 2.5 minutes.

The maximum power when heating to 230 °C, recorded by the wattmeter, was 472 W, which is significantly higher than indicated in the passport data.

Power consumption for 15 minutes of operation at the fourth heating level (200 °C) was 0.022 kW h.

We measured the actual heating temperature at the edges and in the middle of the working part and obtained the following results:

Heating levelActual temperature
140 °C84—105 °C
160 °C107—134 °C
180 °C126—160 °C
200 °C158—174 °C
230 °C180—205 °C

The heating of the device is lower than stated, but the transition between levels is smooth, and the temperature range remains sufficient for high-quality styling.

We also measured the temperature of the outer surface of the device. After 15 minutes of operation at maximum power, the plastic case on the outside heats up to 97-100 °C, while the handle remains slightly warm.

conclusions

The Redmond HS1715 straightener is a budget and effective tool for straightening strands and curling curls. Flexible temperature settings allow you to use it for different types of hair without fear of damaging them. When using the device, your hair looks well-groomed, becomes shiny, soft and does not become electrified.

The cute styler is equipped with smooth ceramic plates with a floating design, which ensures free sliding along the hair without kinks and the risk of snagging individual hairs. For maximum comfort, the device has a plate lock in the closed position and a fairly long cord with a hinged mount, which prevents it from tangling. The compactness and light weight of the device allow you to not only place it beautifully on your dressing table, but also conveniently take it with you on the road.

The only downside is the strong heating of the plastic in the areas where the plates are located — this is a common problem with budget stylers. However, this does not affect the convenience and efficiency of use if you hold the straightener by the handle.

Pros:

  • lightweight compact body
  • nice design
  • ceramic coating of plates with shock absorption
  • wide range of temperature settings
  • automatic shutdown after 60 minutes
  • 360° cord rotation

Cons:

  • strong heating of the body in the area of the panels
