At first sight

Redmond HS1717 is a rectangular massage brush with rounded corners. The body is made of smooth matte ivory-colored plastic, which is pleasant to the touch and does not collect fingerprints. Technical information and caution labels can be easily removed without leaving any adhesive residue.

The design of the comb is neutral and very successful. The device looks fresh and attractive. The case materials do not seem cheap, the assembly is neat, and a visual inspection did not reveal any defects or shortcomings.

Numerous flat teeth about 2 cm high protrude from the ceramic base of the working part of the device. On both sides they are equipped with heated ceramic-coated plates, which ensure hair straightening.

According to the documentation, the plates heat up to 220 degrees, but the plastic tips of the teeth remain moderately warm, not exceeding 50 degrees. The outer row of thin teeth without heating elements serves for additional combing during styling. An ion generator is located in a small raised hole at the base of the teeth.

Mechanical control buttons and a heating indicator are located on the handle of the device. The handle has an optimal diameter and a standard length (13 cm), which makes the comb very convenient to use. The weight of the device excluding the cord is just under 300 grams. The length of the entire device to the cord attachment point is 26.5 cm, and the width of the working part is 6.5 cm.

Power is provided by a 1.8m cord with a swivel cord that allows 360° free rotation to prevent tangling during use. The curved protective cover is equipped with a loop for hanging, and the cord is equipped with Velcro for compact storage.

Instructions

Information about technical parameters, safety rules, operation and maintenance is presented in a compact 23-page booklet in Russian and Kazakh. The text is logically structured and written in simple, understandable language. Several pages at the end of the booklet are intended for the warranty card.

Management

To start working, you need to press the power button located at the bottom of the handle. The device remembers the last set temperature and automatically starts heating to this level when turned on. There are five temperature modes available (140/160/180/200/220 °C), which can be selected by pressing the narrow oblong button under the display scale.

During operation, the LEDs on the display indicate the selected temperature. Flashing LEDs indicate the heating process, and a constant light indicates that the desired temperature has been reached. The ionizer always turns on automatically and lights up during operation. The device turns off when you press the power button. The controls have a noticeable movement, are pressed without effort, but do not work if accidentally touched.

The Redmond HS1717 comb is equipped with an automatic shutdown function when inactive for 30 minutes, which has been confirmed in practice.

Exploitation

Before use, simply remove the packaging material, unwind the cord and connect the rectifier to the network. After pressing the power button, you can begin selecting the temperature mode.

According to the manufacturer’s recommendations, the choice of temperature conditions is carried out as follows:

140 °Cfor colored hair
160°Cfor normal and healthy
180 °Cfor thick and porous
200 °Cfor the naughty and tough
220 °Cfor very curly hair

The hair we chose to test turned out to be quite dense, not very manageable, slightly frizzy and prone to frizz. Based on these data, we decided to use the third heating level. Our choice turned out to be successful.

The straightener was used only on dry, clean and combed hair, as recommended by the manufacturers of such devices. The difference between our comb and a standard styler in the form of an iron with interlocking plates is that you do not need to thoroughly comb your hair before the procedure. Redmond HS1717 perfectly combs strands during styling, does not catch or tear individual hairs.

For thick hair just below shoulder length, it is recommended to divide it into 8 parts, which significantly saves time and reduces the impact of high temperature on the hair compared to a classic straightener, which requires dividing into 16-18 strands.

The instructions recommend going over the strands from above. However, to maintain natural volume at the roots, it is recommended to first go through the strand from above and then from the inside. The ideal result is achieved by pulling the ends with your free hand. The arrangement of the teeth in a cascade also makes it easy to twist the tips inward. After the procedure, there is no static electricity on the hair, it becomes soft, shiny and absolutely smooth. The upper part of the teeth remains moderately warm at any heating level, which feels pleasant on the scalp while combing.

Care

Care recommendations are standard for devices of this type. The straightener should not be immersed in water or cleaned with abrasive or chemically aggressive products. The housing can be cleaned by wiping with a damp cloth and then with a dry cloth after the device has been unplugged and completely cooled.

Our measurements

The device heats up to the minimum temperature (140 °C) in 30 seconds, and to the maximum temperature (220 °C) in 1 minute 20 seconds.

The maximum power when heated to 220 °C, measured by a wattmeter, was 330 W, which significantly exceeds the data specified in the technical documentation.

Energy consumption for 10 minutes of operation at the third heating level (180 °C) was 0.032 kWh.

We measured the actual heating temperature at the edges and in the middle of the working part of the comb, and here's what we found:

Heat levelActual temperature
140 °C96—108 °C
160°C125—137 °C
180 °C129—155 °C
200 °C160—182 °C
220 °C184—196 °C

The heat setting is lower than stated, but the transition between temperature levels is smooth and the range remains sufficient to successfully style a variety of hair types.

The temperature of the outer surface of the device was also measured. After 10 minutes of operation at maximum power, the outside of the plastic case heats up to 52–58 °C. The handle remains a little warm.

conclusions

The Redmond HS1717 straightening comb, according to the results of our testing, really lived up to expectations as a convenient and effective tool for gentle hair styling. The device is equipped with a smooth adjustment of the heating temperature in the optimal range, which allows you to efficiently straighten hair of various types without the risk of damage. The device effectively copes even with thick and unruly hair, providing it with shine, a healthy appearance and a complete absence of static electricity.

In addition, it is worth noting the nice design, light weight, sufficient length of the cord with a swivel mount, convenient controls with LED indication, as well as functions for remembering the last used mode and automatically turning off when inactive.
