The user manual is printed on thick glossy paper and is a 12-page A5 brochure with a large number of color illustrations and diagrams.

The instructions contain detailed information about the design of the humidifier, tips on controlling the device and its operation, describe in detail the installation and use of the mobile application, and provide tips on caring for the device. There is also an indispensable table with a list of possible faults and methods for eliminating them yourself.

Control

The humidifier control panel consists of three touch buttons and four white LED indicators.

After turning on the device using the power button, the device emits a sound signal and goes into high-intensity cold steam mode. To turn off the humidifier, press the power button a second time.

The middle button controls the feeding power. The first press switches the humidifier to medium speed, the second – to minimum, and the third sets the automatic operating mode.

The rightmost sensor controls the illumination of the shaft and the display on the panel. With successive presses you can turn the humidifier's colored lighting and LEDs on the front of the housing on or off.

In automatic mode, the humidifier adjusts power depending on the level of relative humidity in the room. Below 52% it operates at maximum power, from 52% to 57% it switches to medium power, from 57% to 63% to minimum power, and above 63% it pauses.

The color of the LED illumination of the shaft changes in accordance with the hygrometer readings. Yellow shines when humidity is low (less than 40%), green is between 40% and 60%, and blue indicates relative humidity above 60%.

Smartphone control

The Evolution HF-878 Smart humidifier works with the well-known Smart Life application — Smart Living (Volcano Technology Limited).

The program runs on the same platform as the well-known Tuya Smart, which recently left Russian users due to sanctions. It supports many types of smart home appliances from a variety of manufacturers and is very popular, with over 10 million downloads at the time of review and an average rating of 4.8 based on 615K reviews.

After installation, you need to read and accept the user agreement and privacy policy, register an account (you need to confirm your email address or authorize through Google services). Then the program also asks you to agree to the collection of user data and the sending of advertising — but you can easily refuse these two options.

To automatically detect the humidifier, you must allow the application to access information about the location of the smartphone and devices nearby.

Before synchronization begins, the program requests the SSID and password from the wireless network. Like the vast majority of household appliances, the humidifier, unfortunately, only works in 2.4 GHz networks. This can create certain difficulties for residents of apartment buildings with a large number of neighboring access points.

Smart Life automatically detects when your humidifier is turned on and adds it to your smart home devices. The entire procedure lasts no more than a minute and is completed without any difficulty.

The main screen of the device is very laconic: in the center we see the readings of the hygrometer built into the humidifier. And a little lower we can set the fan power: select one of three manual speeds or set the automatic mode — depending on the humidity in the room.

From the settings page we can manage notifications, share access to the humidifier with family members (they will, of course, need their own Smart Life account), contact technical support, check the network for problems or update the firmware.

If you wish, you can enable automatic firmware update — then the application will independently keep the firmware up to date.

In the “Smart Scenarios” section, you can configure the humidifier so that it turns on, turns off, and selects a different operating mode depending on external conditions: when the temperature or humidity outside the window changes, the owner leaves the apartment, or when a timer or external sensor is triggered.

As an experiment, we set the device to turn off when the relative humidity in our area increased to 70%. The application receives weather information from external sources; no connection to an outside sensor is required.

In the scenarios section, the application also offers several preset templates: for example, you can turn off the humidifier if the user leaves the house, turn it on at a set time, or when the humidity drops.

Exploitation

The unpacked humidifier must be checked for damage that may have occurred during transportation. If you find any damage, you should return the device to the seller without turning it on.

Before using a new humidifier, it is recommended to thoroughly rinse the reservoir and softening filter with water.

When choosing a place to install a humidifier, it is important to consider that the surface on which it will be placed should not be sensitive to moisture. For example, parquet or laminate can become deformed when exposed to water vapor. Also, do not place the device on soft surfaces that may block the bottom ventilation hole. It is recommended to place the device at least 2 meters away from furniture or electronic devices that could be damaged by moisture.

You can pour water into the tank through a special lid. This method is usually more convenient than filling a removed tank, although both options are possible. The maximum level mark is below the top edge of the shaft, and the instructions recommend not filling water above this mark.

When the tank is empty, the humidifier flashes the LEDs on the control panel ten times and turns off automatically. If you set up the mobile app, you will receive a push notification on your smartphone reminding you to add water and turn on the device.

Care

The manufacturer recommends cleaning the reservoir and working chamber of the humidifier every 2-3 days to prevent the formation of mineral deposits and bacterial film. A soft damp or dry cloth should be used for this purpose. If you use a wet wipe, be careful not to get moisture into the device's vents.

It is important to avoid the use of abrasives, solvents, and contact with hard or sharp objects when cleaning the humidifier.

Turning on the backlight increases power consumption by approximately 0.5 W. In standby mode, the humidifier consumes 0.6 W. The noise emitted by the device during operation does not depend on power and is approximately 34 dBA. Evolution HF-878 Smart is a very quiet device.

A full tank of the device, filled under the plug, holds 4060 ml of water. Another 430 ml is placed in the working chamber.

The maximum productivity of the device that we achieved during practical tests was about 264 ml/h. The value we obtained corresponds to the “fork” indicated in the passport data.

Maximum humidification intensity

Having turned on the device in automatic mode, we left it for a long time and waited for a message about the end of water in the tank. The measurement results can be seen on the graph.

Starting in a room with a humidity of about 40%, the device worked until the tank was empty for almost 17 hours. The humidity in the room slowly increased, reaching a quite acceptable 57% by the end of the test. The achieved result cannot be called a record, but with prolonged operation in this mode, the device is able to saturate the atmosphere with moisture to a comfortable level.

Result: good.

Minimal moisture

The device demonstrated the longest operating time, of course, at minimum power.

At “low speed” the humidifier improved the room climate for approximately 26 hours. The maximum relative humidity achieved in this test was 54%.

Result: excellent.

Conclusions

The Evolution HF-878 Smart humidifier is cute and looks like a fashionable table lamp, so it’s easy to fit into your interior. It consumes little electricity and is easy to operate.

The capacity of the tank is sufficient for long-term operation: for example, it can be turned on at night to make breathing easier during sleep. Practical tests showed not very high performance, but you can place this model in a small room and get good results.

The built-in hygrometer shows the level of humidity in the room and pauses the operation of the device when the set value is reached. In automatic mode, the humidifier maintains an optimal power level depending on sensor readings: this is a convenient and, we believe, popular function. But the device does not share data about the temperature in the room with the user. There is no automatic shutdown timer here either.

The mobile application allows you to control the device from anywhere in the world and significantly expands the basic capabilities of the device.
