Huawei MatePad Pro 13.2” tablet review

Tablets with 10-11 inch screens are available on the market in sufficient variety, providing a wide choice for consumers. However, larger models, with a screen diagonal of 13.2 inches, remain a counter phenomenon. They are higher in price and, unlike laptops, do not always provide the same range of functionality. However, there are tasks and use cases where large tablets are the optimal choice. Therefore, the Huawei MatePad Pro 13.2" is particularly interesting, as it aims to become the main competitor to the iPad Pro 12.9".

The tablet comes in two configurations and is available in two colors: with internal storage of 256 GB and 512 GB, in shades of Golden Black and Green, respectively. However, visually these colors can rather be described as dark gray and silvery-greenish. In Russia, the cost of the basic version (256 GB) is 90 thousand rubles, and it comes without a keyboard included. The 512 GB version includes a keyboard and is available for 100 thousand.

Let's look at the technical characteristics of the model and compare it with its main competitor.

The characteristics give rise to interesting speculation. In some respects, the Huawei device seems more attractive (larger screen, but with less weight and thickness), while in others it is inferior to its competitor (more RAM and internal memory, lack of an LTE option, less powerful processor). Let's test the tablet and find out how much better it is and in what way.

Packaging, accessories and accessories

MatePad Pro 13.2″ in the version with 512 GB of storage comes complete with a cover and keyboard, which are placed in a separate box. It is not by chance that we write “and”, because in this case these are two different accessories, although they complement each other.

Please note that this time the box with the tablet itself is black, which is different from the boxes of other devices from Huawei. The manufacturer already makes it clear that this is a flagship device. Inside the main package are the tablet itself, a USB-A to USB-C cable and a charger, which deserves special attention.

First, let's pay attention to power. Instead of 40-watt units in other Huawei tablets, here we see as much as 88 W (20 V 4.4 A).

And the second feature: you can connect not only a USB-A cable to the unit, but also a USB-C cable, which is especially important these days.

Now let's look at the contents of the second, white box. It contains manual leaflets and two accessories: a keyboard and a cover.

Theoretically, they can be used separately, but the cover without the keyboard covers only the back of the tablet, and if you connect the keyboard without using the cover, the tablet cannot be installed at a convenient angle for work. Therefore, these two accessories should only be used together. When expanded it looks like this:

A distinctive feature of this keyboard is the presence of a touchpad. When you touch the touchpad, a mouse cursor appears on the screen and can be used in the same way as a regular laptop, provided that the application supports this function (which we will discuss in more detail below). The keyboard is attached to the tablet using a magnetic strip that occupies most of the length of the case. This process is clearly visible in the two photographs presented.

In turn, the cover is magnetized to the top side of the case, and the bottom part of the cover bends freely so that the device can be installed at a variety of angles. For example, like this:

On the one hand, such a decision can be considered quite thoughtful. On the other hand, it has disadvantages. Firstly, the entire design becomes significantly more bulky compared to a traditional keyboard cover (like the MatePad Pro 2022 or MatePad Air). Secondly, it is not very reliable. The keyboard can sometimes accidentally detach, and if you pick up the tablet without holding the keyboard, it may fall off simply under its own weight. In addition, the cover is not securely attached to the tablet, and there is a chance that it will slide off if you accidentally press the device — which is very likely, for example, when using the tablet in transport.

And we have already used previous models of Huawei MatePad (Pro and Air) and iPad Pro 12.9" many times in the subway, for example, placing the tablet on our laps on top of a bag or briefcase — everything was convenient. However, in the case of the MatePad Pro 13.2" this The scenario turns out to be less convenient: there is not enough space to securely place the device, and this poses a risk. If another passenger accidentally touches it, even lightly, the structure will almost certainly fall apart.

In general, the MatePad Pro 13.2" with accessories is not as convenient for mobile use as, for example, for working at a desk. However, the keyboard itself is more comfortable here compared to more compact tablets. The keys are larger and their travel is quite deep, as possible in this case. There is a top row of function keys, which are missing on both other MatePad models and the iPad Pro 12.9". There are also full-size keys Shift, Home, End, [{, ]}...

And there is one more detail: if you turn the keyboard so that it is on the back of the tablet (for example, if you decide to read on the device, but do not want to detach the keyboard), then the buttons become inactive, which eliminates accidental presses.

Now let's look at the design of the tablet itself.

Design

There hasn't been much that has surprised us in tablet design in recent years. Progress in this area seemed to be slowing down. However, with the advent of the MatePad Pro 13.2″, we couldn’t help but express our admiration – the first reaction was “wow!” At first glance, what is surprising is the narrow frame around the screen, only about 3 mm (or 4 mm including the metal frame) on all sides. This is much more compact than the iPad Pro 12.9″, despite the larger screen area of the MatePad Pro 13.2″.

The lower weight is primarily due to the use of fiberglass instead of metal for the rear panel of the case. In addition, the device is significantly thinner — not just symbolically, but by almost a full millimeter, which is about 14% of the thickness of the iPad Air. This may seem like a small difference, but in actual use it is very noticeable!

The edges of the tablet are slightly rounded and made of plastic painted to look like metal. The block with two cameras, flash and microphone protrudes slightly, but not very much, so the tablet lies almost flat on the table.

The block itself looks stylish and elegant. It makes the tablet look expensive. Even from such details you understand: you have a top-end device in your hands.

The model we tested has an interesting shade of color. Outwardly, it may seem simply silver, but with unusual undertones: sometimes green, sometimes blue, sometimes gray… In photographs this effect is more noticeable than in real life, which gives the device a peculiar charm.

The arrangement of buttons, connectors and other elements corresponds to the traditional layout for tablets from Huawei. At the top, next to the camera unit and the volume button, there are three microphone holes designed for optimal sound reception during video calls. There are no elements at the bottom, including the keyboard connector, as it is mounted differently (as we demonstrated above).

On the right, when holding the device in a vertical orientation, we find the speaker grilles and the central USB-C connector. On the left is the power button, as well as two holes for sound output. The speakers are located three on each side, providing high-quality sound that meets the standards for this type of device.

The tablet is not equipped with an LTE module, and also does not support memory cards, which excludes the presence of corresponding slots in the case. There is also no 3.5 mm jack for wired headphones, so using them will require purchasing adapters to USB-C (which, however, are available at an inexpensive price).

All possible shortcomings and features fade into the background before the impression caused by the main advantage of the tablet — its screen. Even the presence of a notch for the front camera does not detract from this impression.

Now let's take a closer look at the screen itself.

Screen

The tablet screen has an impressive diagonal of 13.2 inches (which is closer to the size of full-fledged laptops), the resolution is 2880x1920, providing a decent pixel density of 262 ppi. The manufacturer described it as a flexible OLED, although in this case the screen is not flexible and can be considered simply OLED.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. The anti-glare properties of the screen, judging by the reflection of objects, significantly exceed the similar characteristics of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen. For clarity, photographs are presented with the reflection of the white surface on the screens turned off (on the left is the tested tablet, on the right is the Nexus 7).

The screen of this tablet is noticeably darker (the brightness in the photographs is 47 versus 102 for the Nexus 7). On this device, the doubling of reflected objects on the screen is minimal, which indicates the absence of an air gap between the layers of the screen (OGS — One Glass Solution type screen). This design solution gives the screen better anti-glare properties, especially in conditions of intense external light. However, it is worth noting that if the outer glass is damaged, the entire screen will need to be replaced, which can be a costly process.

There is an oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating on the outer surface of the screen, which makes fingerprints easier to remove and reduces the rate at which they form than regular glass.

When displaying the white field in full screen and manually controlling the brightness, its maximum value was about 580 cd/m² in normal conditions, rising to 740 cd/m² in strong light. The minimum brightness value is 1.7 cd/m², which allows you to use the device even in complete darkness. The automatic brightness adjustment function, depending on the light sensor, works adequately in various conditions.

At high and medium brightness levels there is significant modulation with a frequency of approximately 60 or 120 Hz. The figures below show brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) for several brightness settings. First for 60Hz mode:

At high and medium screen brightness, the modulation frequency is low (60 Hz), while the modulation duty cycle is also low, which eliminates visible flicker. When the brightness is reduced significantly, modulation appears at a higher frequency (1.44 kHz), but this also does not cause visible flicker.

The screen settings provide the ability to enable a high refresh rate mode up to 144 Hz, but in fact the maximum frequency is 120 Hz. Perhaps the stated frequency of 144 Hz will be achieved after the release of a firmware update.

In 120 Hz mode, the smoothness of scrolling menus and other interface elements is noticeably improved. It should be noted whether this will change the nature of the modulation. 120Hz mode:

At high and medium brightness, an increase in the modulation frequency by a factor of 2 is observed, but at low brightness the nature of the modulation remains unchanged. There is no visible flicker.

The screen of this device is equipped with a Flexible OLED matrix, which is an active matrix based on organic light-emitting diodes. Reproduction of a full-color image is carried out using subpixels of three colors — red ®, green (G) and blue (B) in equal proportions. This is confirmed by a fragment of a microphotograph:

The screen has excellent viewing angles. True, white color takes on a slight blue-green tint when deviated, but black color remains just black at any angle. It is so black that the contrast setting is not applicable in this case. For comparison, we present photographs in which identical images are displayed on the screen of the tested tablet and on the screen of the second comparison participant, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to approximately 200 cd/m², and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K.

Color rendition is good, the colors are moderately saturated, the color balance of the screens varies slightly. Let us remind you that the photograph cannot serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of color rendering and is provided only for conditional visual illustration. In particular, the pronounced reddish tint of the white and gray fields, present in photographs of the screen of the tablet in question, is visually absent when viewed perpendicularly, which is confirmed by hardware tests using a spectrophotometer. The reason is that the spectral sensitivity of the camera sensor does not exactly match this characteristic of human vision.

The photo above was taken with the “Normal Colors” profile active (it is selected by default) in the screen settings, there are two of them: “Normal Colors” and “Vivid Colors”.

The Vivid Colors profile has slightly increased color saturation:

The brightness at an angle for both screens decreased noticeably, but in the case of the tested tablet the drop in brightness is much less pronounced. As a result, with formally the same brightness, this screen visually looks much brighter (compared to LCD screens), since you often have to look at the screen of a mobile device from at least a slight angle.

Switching the state of the matrix elements is performed almost instantly, but at the turn-on edge there may be a step with a width of approximately 17 ms (which corresponds to a screen refresh rate of approximately 60 Hz) or approximately 8 ms (120 Hz). For example, this is what the dependence of brightness on time looks like when moving from black to white:

Under some conditions, the presence of such a step leads to plumes trailing behind moving objects.

A gamma curve constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray showed that there is no significant blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The index of the approximating power function is 2.22, which is close to the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

Let us recall that in the case of OLED screens, the brightness of image fragments dynamically changes in accordance with the nature of the displayed image — it decreases slightly for generally light images. As a result, the resulting dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) most likely does not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential display of shades of gray on almost the entire screen.

The color gamut in the case of the Vivid colors profile is wide — very close to DCI-P3:

When you select the Normal colors profile, the gamut is compressed to the sRGB boundaries:

Note that on screens with a wide color gamut (without appropriate correction), the colors of regular images optimized for sRGB devices appear unnaturally saturated. Hence the recommendation: in most cases, watching movies, photographs and everything natural is better when choosing the Regular colors profile, and only if the photo or video has DCI-P3 coverage, adopted in digital cinema and “native” for top-end Apple devices, does it make sense to switch the profile on Bright colors.

This device has the ability to adjust the color balance by selecting a color temperature profile or adjusting the hue on the color wheel (see pictures above). However, in the case of the Normal colors profile, even without correction, the balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is quite close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is below 2 units, which is considered very good even for a professional device indicator. At the same time, color temperature and ΔE change little from hue to hue — this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

There is a Natural Tone function, which, if enabled, adjusts the color balance to environmental conditions. We enabled this feature and tested how it works (Normal Colors profile):

When lighting conditions change greatly, color balance adjustment is weak, so from our point of view this function does not work as it should. Note that the current standard is to calibrate display devices to a white point of 6500 K, but in principle, correction for the color temperature of external light can be useful if you want to achieve a better match between the image on the screen and what is visible on paper (or any other device). a medium on which colors are formed by the reflection of incident light) under current conditions.

Of course, there is a function to reduce the intensity of the blue component. Her description, of course, contains misinformation about eye fatigue. In principle, bright light can lead to disruption of the circadian rhythm, but everything can be solved by reducing the brightness to a low, but still comfortable level, and there is absolutely no point in distorting the color balance by reducing the contribution of blue.

This device supports DisplayPort Alt Mode for USB Type-C — outputs image and sound to an external device when connected to a USB port (USBTreeView program report). When connected to a Full HD monitor, video output is carried out in 1080p mode at 60 Hz frame rate. There is only one mode of operation — simple copying of the tablet screen. The picture on a TV or monitor screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 is displayed in portrait or landscape orientation, inscribed in height and with black margins on the sides. There is no point-to-point output.

Let's summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness (740 cd/m² in SDR mode and up to 970 cd/m² in HDR) and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value (up to 1.7 cd/m²). It is acceptable to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, no visible flicker, a high refresh rate mode (120 Hz), as well as a color gamut close to sRGB and good color balance (if you choose the right profile). At the same time, let’s remember the general advantages of OLED screens: true black color (if nothing is reflected on the screen) and a noticeably smaller drop in image brightness than LCDs when viewed at an angle. The screen quality is very high.

Performance

The tablet is equipped with a Kirin 9000W processor, which includes eight cores: one Cortex-A77 core with a frequency of 3130 MHz, three Cortex-A77 cores with a clock frequency of 2540 MHz and four Cortex-A55 cores with a frequency of 2050 MHz. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) — Mali-G78 MP24. The tablet's RAM capacity is 12 GB. Let's evaluate the device's performance in benchmarks and compare it with the Huawei MatePad Air (2023), equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, as well as the Apple iPad Pro 12.9" 2021, which uses the Apple M1 chip. Although the 2022 model runs on a more powerful Apple M2 processor, We'll look at the results of the previous version, which is closer in price to the MatePad Pro 13.2" than the more expensive M2-based iPad Pro.

Let's start with browser tests: Octane Benchmark, Kraken Benchmark and JetStream 2.

Let's make it clear why we are providing three different results for the MatePad Pro 13.2″, which differ significantly from each other. This is because we use the Chrome browser by default when testing all tablets to minimize browser impact on the results. However, on the MatePad Pro 13.2″, Chrome performed inappropriately poorly, delivering numbers significantly worse than other devices with similar performance levels, and even lower. These anomalies were noticeable even without using benchmarks: normal web page scrolling felt jerky. Therefore, we decided to conduct additional testing of the tablet in our own browser of the HarmonyOS operating system, as well as in Yandex Browser. The results we received amazed us — the difference was 6-9 times! Although the interpretation of these numbers in comparison with other tablets raises questions, a practical recommendation emerges: it is better to use Yandex Browser on the MatePad Pro 13.2″ rather than Chrome.

Next comes the comprehensive Geekbench benchmark (since we tested previous tablets in version 5, we also ran Geekbench 5 on this model, and not the newer Geekbench 6).

It can be seen that the Kirin 9000W is inferior to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, although not by that much. The gap from the Apple M1 is much larger, but this is natural.

Again there is a lag, and a more significant one. It is clear that the GPU turns out to be the weak point of the device under test.

Here the difference between the two Huawei devices is smaller, but the overall picture is still the same.

Overall, we can say that the performance of the MatePad Pro 13.2″ is decent, but for games it is not the optimal choice, even if you choose only from the Huawei tablet line, since the GPU turns out to be the weak point.

Operating system and communication

The tablet is equipped with the HarmonyOS 4 operating system. This is the latest version of the OS from Huawei, which retains all the characteristics of HarmonyOS 3. These include support for Android applications, the presence in the company's application store of Russian banks removed from the Play Store, and support for Russian payment cards Mastercard, Visa and «Mir», as well as the ability to pay through a mobile operator account.

As part of the cosmetic improvements, the main focus is on the interface and interaction of the tablet with other Huawei devices. One of the most interesting innovations is the AlwaysOn screen mode with screen saver display. This mode is activated either by the user's gaze (probably using the front camera) or by touching the glass. Considering that the background on such screensavers is usually dark, energy consumption on the battery remains low (which is especially true for OLED screens, which we will discuss below).

Devices running HarmonyOS 4.0 are reported to have a new option called Live Window, similar to the Dynamic Island feature on iPhone devices. However, it seems that this feature only applies to smartphones, as we did not find it on the MatePad Pro 13.2″. In general, although the options for customizing the appearance have become more extensive, if you do not study the innovations and customize the interface using guides, you can skip the changes, and the tablet will be used similarly to previous versions of the OS.

However, it is worth noting that the presence of advertising in the proprietary browser remains unclear to us. When you launch the browser, a video is displayed on the entire screen, which cannot be quickly scrolled through (or you can, but only after a few seconds). This is an unusual occurrence, and we have not been able to find a way to get rid of these ads through settings, cache resets, or other manipulations.

There are also features with software keyboards. In order to set up a physical keyboard for Russian, you must select Microsoft Swiftkey rather than Celia Keyboard. Otherwise, when switching layouts, “Russian” will be displayed on the screen, but the letters of the English alphabet will actually be entered.

We hope that the manufacturer will soon fix all of the above (as well as the Chrome brakes) with the help of minor updates. So we warn you about the problems encountered, but we do not believe that because of them you should refuse to purchase the device.

Although the tablet does not have an LTE module, it does support satellite navigation, which is relatively rare.

We’re not even talking about the Wi-Fi 6 standard — it goes without saying in a flagship device.

The tablet is equipped with a built-in battery with a capacity of 5050 mAh, which operates at an increased voltage of 7.7 V, equivalent to 10100 mAh at a standard voltage of 3.85 V. If you convert this value into watt hours, you get 39, which is approximately the value of the battery iPad Pro 12.9". However, when comparing these devices, there is an important aspect to consider: due to the use of an OLED screen on the MatePad Pro 13.2", all battery life tests with a white background lead to faster battery consumption, while Using a black background the results would be better. It should also be noted that in the online video viewing test conducted in Chrome, which has obvious problems on this device, the operating time in this test was too low. However, the tablet performed very well in the gaming benchmark.

To evaluate the performance degradation due to heating, we used the Burnout Benchmark program, which allows you to load the processor (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU) and neural processor (NPU):

The tablet provides fast charging, and using the included power supply and cable, the device charges in about an hour or so. It's important to note that using a different power bank or USB-C cable may significantly increase charging time. Surprisingly, even choosing a different USB-C cable can affect the speed of the process.
