In order for a home to breathe easily, climate control systems are needed. They not only cleanse the atmosphere of dust, but also increase humidity, ozone the air and fight pathogenic microbes.

On its front side, the manufacturer posted a photograph of the device in action and listed the main “highlights” of the model. These include an 8-stage air filtration system, noise level up to 62 dB, ultraviolet sterilization, ionization and ozonation functions, humidification capacity up to 300 ml/h, automatic sleep mode and touch control.

Having opened the box, we found inside the air purifier itself with installed filters, a user manual, quick start instructions and a service book.

The Garlyn V42 filter element is a “sandwich” of four layers. Garlyn household appliances are always well documented, and the AirClean V42 is no exception: the instructions are written in detail, carefully and competently. The brochure describes in detail the design of the climate control system, control of the device and its care.

For those who are eager to get acquainted with the new device without going into technical details, the manufacturer has included a quick start guide in the box: a quick read of the small card is enough to get started.

Control

When the device is connected to the network, it is in standby mode: the “Power” button on the control panel is highlighted in red. After pressing it, the climate complex starts, displays information about air quality and lights up the touch control buttons.

In the center of the panel, above the power button, the device shows the current values ​​​​from the air quality sensor, displaying the content of PM2.5 suspended particles in micrograms per cubic meter. A little to the right you can see the temperature (°C) and relative humidity (%) in the room.

The button with the image of a fan controls the fan rotation speed  — the AirClean V42 has four of them.

To the left of the display is a sensor for setting the automatic shutdown timer . By successively touching it, you can set auto shutdown after 2, 4, 8 and 12 hours. The fifth press turns off the timer.

The bottom row contains sensors for additional functions:

  • Automatic operating mode . When this function is activated, the air purifier independently selects the fan power depending on the readings of the air quality sensor.
  • Ionization and ozonation modes . A short press activates the ionizer (it is turned on by default), a long press activates ozonation (the indicator begins to blink slowly).
  • Humidification functions . By default it is disabled. When turned on, the device makes an intermittent sound and opens the water filter compartment valve, allowing part of the air flow to pass through the humidifier.
  • Night mode . After double-clicking the sensor, the device turns off all indicators, with the exception of the power button and the crescent-shaped symbol, turns off the backlight and switches to reduced power.
  • Holding the button with the image of a lock for 3 seconds blocks the control panel from accidental pressing or childish curiosity.
  • The far right button turns on and off the UV irradiation, which destroys pathogens. When the air filter reaches the end of its service life, the climate control system lights up the ultraviolet lamp indicator, reminding you to replace the filter unit.

Since during normal operation it is difficult to see all the capabilities of the display, we present here a complete diagram of indicators taken from the operating instructions.

Exploitation

Before you start using the climate control system, you should carefully unpack the device, removing all shipping materials and stickers. The air filter and humidifying filters must be removed from the packaging, the plastic film in which they may have been wrapped must be removed, and inserted into their proper places.

It is best to place the device on a hard, level, moisture-resistant and stable surface, away from furniture and other electrical appliances. Avoid installation on carpets and other long-pile floor coverings. It is also important not to place it near heat sources and avoid direct sunlight. It is recommended to leave at least 30 centimeters of free space between the device and walls and furniture to ensure sufficient air circulation.

Based on experience, devices of this type work more efficiently if they are installed not on the floor, but on a small elevation, for example, on a bedside table. This position allows you to avoid collecting large dust from the floor and will increase the interval between cleaning the pre-filter.

Before starting, you must add water to the humidifier reservoir to the maximum level.

After connecting to the network, the climate control system will not start working automatically. To start, press the «Power» button (in standby mode it lights up red). If the power supply fails, the device, unfortunately, will not resume useful activity on its own; manual intervention will be required.

The complex turns on in automatic power control mode, adjusting this parameter depending on the degree of air pollution. When the PM2.5 particle content is above 100 µg/m³, the air purifier operates at maximum (4) speed. In the range from 50 to 99 µg/m³, the average (3) speed is set, and if the pollution level drops below 49 µg/m³, the fan switches to low (2) speed.

The color of the RGB lighting of the exhaust grilles at the top of the device changes depending on the content of foreign substances in the air. When the quality is good, the backlight lights up blue, when the pollution level is above 50 μg/m³, it changes color to yellow, and when the limit of 100 μg/m³ is exceeded, it lights up red.

The device is also equipped with a light sensor. In automatic control mode, if the illumination in the room decreases below the set value, the climate control system automatically switches to night mode, turning on the minimum (1) speed and turning off the indication.

Unfortunately, automatic switching to night mode cannot be canceled. If the device is placed in a room with insufficient lighting, it will operate at minimum power when the lights are turned off. Automatic mode may then be less efficient and power may have to be adjusted manually.

It is noted that in humidification mode, the climate complex not only purifies the air, but also increases humidity, avoiding oversaturation of the atmosphere with water vapor and fog, as happens, for example, with ultrasonic humidifiers.

Despite the hygrostat function stated on the packaging and in the technical specifications, we were unable to discover the possibility of installing and maintaining a given humidity level in the device. According to the user manual, this feature may not be available.

In general, it is recommended to follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing and using the climate control system to achieve maximum efficiency.

Care

The service life of the air filter depends on the intensity of use of the air purifier and ranges from 6 to 12 months. It should be replaced when the corresponding symbol appears on the display, and after installing a new filter element, you must reset the service interval by long pressing the “UV” button.

When dirty, the humidifying filter should be placed in water and cleaned with a soft brush, drying before next use. It is recommended to do this once a week.

The coarse filter should also be serviced weekly: it is washed with water for 3-5 minutes and returned to its place.

The power consumption and noise of the device depend, of course, on the operating mode.

At minimum speed, the sound of the air purifier operating is barely noticeable: the device can easily be placed in the bedroom. In maximum power mode, the sounds produced by the Garlyn AirClean V42 are slightly disturbing, but you can talk near it without raising your voice.

The power consumed by the air purifier is, depending on the speed, from 7.2 to 43 W: this is a very low figure. Turning on the backlight adds about 2 W, and the ozonation function adds about another 4.5 W. Ultraviolet treatment and ionization do not have a significant effect on energy consumption.

To roughly estimate the maximum air flow rate, we measured the flow rate by placing an anemometer close to the indoor unit outlet grilles at 16 points. The average speed was approximately 2.43 m/s. With a known cross-sectional area of the air duct (910 × 45 mm = 0.041 m²), the productivity can be calculated: 5.98 m³/min, or 358.58 m³/hour. This exactly (taking into account the measurement error) corresponds to the passport characteristics.

To evaluate the filtration efficiency of Garlyn AirClean V42, we filled a test hermetically sealed room (approximately 2.1 × 2.1 × 2.4 meters, that is, 10.5 m³ volume) with smoke from a home-made smoke generator to a concentration “you can’t see the fingers of an outstretched arm.” .

The concentration of suspended particles was measured using an optical sensor SDS011, which can detect PM2.5 up to 999 μg/m³ and PM10 up to 1999 μg/m³. These values were used as the maximum.

To compare the speed of air purification using the device and naturally, we repeated the experiment: we turned off the air purifier and looked at how fast the particles would settle if we didn’t do anything special with them. We present the obtained data in the form of a graph.

Running in maximum performance mode, AirClean V42 reduced PM2.5 pollution to 50% of the maximum in 4 minutes 33 seconds, and the level of suspended particulate matter dropped to an acceptable level of 30 μg/m³ in 9 minutes 49 seconds. Pollution with larger PM10s decreased significantly faster.

After 10 minutes of operation at maximum power, the amount of PM2.5 and PM10 dropped to 21 and 28 μg/m³, respectively, while natural settling left air pollution at extremely dangerous levels, beyond the maximum sensitivity threshold of the sensor used.

Result: excellent.

Air purification, night mode

In enhanced mode, the device showed very good efficiency, and we decided to conduct another, optional test — to check the performance of the night program.

“At night,” when the power consumed by the device is reduced by six times compared to the maximum, and the sound of the operating fan ceases to be heard, the efficiency, of course, also decreases, but remains at a very decent level.

It took the device 9 minutes 4 seconds to reduce the concentration of PM2.5 particles to 50% of the maximum, and after 30 minutes of operation the concentration reached a completely safe 5.7 μg/m³. As in the previous test, PM10 particle pollution decreased noticeably faster.

Result: excellent.

Air humidification

To measure the humidification performance, we turned on the device at maximum power in an enclosed room of about 17 m² with a ceiling height of 2.5 m. The doors and windows were closed, the central heating was turned off, and the room humidity was artificially maintained using a household dehumidifier at 40%-42 % (air dehumidifier Kitfort KT-2843 was used in the test ).

For six hours of operation in humidification mode, the device consumed 940 ml of water, which corresponds to a productivity of 157 ml/h — noticeably lower than the rated value.

The moisture evaporation efficiency demonstrated by the device is comparable to the measurement results of entry-level and even mid-level ultrasonic humidifiers. But it is worth remembering that it was achieved at maximum fan power, with corresponding power consumption and noise.

Сonclusions

The Garlyn AirClean V42 climate center has a good design, pleasant appearance and excellent efficiency. It combines high performance at maximum power with silent operation at night, making it a good choice for small to medium-sized spaces, including bedrooms.

A nice addition to the basic functionality of this model are humidification, ultraviolet sterilization, ionization and ozonation of air. The automatic mode also works well, in which the device independently sets the power depending on the level of pollution.

The disadvantages of the device include a light sensor with a high response threshold that cannot be turned off automatically. A significant drawback is also the lack of remote control and the impossibility of integration into popular smart home control systems: this, in our opinion, is a mandatory option for a modern climate control device of this class.
