Review of the Felfri HF-7C irrigator: for quality care of the oral cavity and even the nose

07.12.2023 08:49

The Felfri HF-C7 irrigator, which is in our test laboratory today, offers 8 different attachments for different purposes and has 6 operating modes. This irrigator, despite its compactness and the included bag for easy transportation, is a typical device for stationary oral hygiene. However, its special feature is that once its battery is fully charged, you can use it for a whole month without the need to recharge.

The tank volume of 420 ml allows you to count on a minimum of manipulations during operation — this amount of water should be enough for a full one-time use. We will conduct testing and check how convenient this model and all its features will be.

Equipment

The device arrived to us in a small rectangular cardboard box. It looks strong (dense) and neat. The manufacturer didn’t bother much with the design and choice of fonts — most of the surface is covered with black paint, the bottom is turquoise, and the fonts are white and turquoise. However, now minimalism is at a premium, so such stylization is justified.

On the front side we see a photo of the assembled device, the brand name and the name of the device.

The brand name is duplicated on all four side faces, as well as brief information about the device and the manufacturer.

In the box we found a handbag containing:

  • irrigator motor unit
  • water tank with a lid (in the photo the motor block is inserted into the tank)
  • handle with hose
  • 8 replaceable attachments (jet tip — 2 pcs., brush tip — 2 pcs., orthodontic — 1 pc., periodontal — 1 pc.,
  • tongue cleaner — 1 pc., nasal nozzle — 1 pc.)
  • Type-C adapter and cord
  • instruction manual, advertising brochure

All parts and accessories of the irrigator are tightly packed in a durable fabric bag that occupies almost the entire box. In the remaining space of the box there is a small instruction manual and a promotional brochure. The packaging reliably protects the device and all components from damage during transportation and storage.

At first sight

Stationary irrigators are often larger than their portable counterparts, but the clever distribution of parts on the body of the Felfri HF-7C allowed it to take up not so much space, especially when assembled. You can store the device by placing the motor unit in the water tank, and then putting it together with all the components in a convenient small bag.

The water tank is made of transparent plastic. It is marked with graduations in milliliters (100, 200, 300, 400; maximum tank capacity — 420 ml) and in ounces (5, 10 and 15). At the bottom of the tank there is a hole with a rubber valve, which is adjacent to the rubber gasket on the base of the body. What surprised us was the absence of any kind of fastening that would allow the container to confidently stay in place. The handle of the device has a round plastic base with a connector for attaching to the motor block on one side and a smaller round base with a place for fixing the handle itself; between them there is a crossbar for winding the hose. The handle is attached to the base thanks to a magnet. It is lightweight and has an easy-to-grip shape. In the center of the handle there is a slider-switch, at the top there is a hole for the nozzle and a button for removing the nozzle, at the bottom there is the outlet of the water hose and the hose itself.

The device comes with 8 attachments — 2 identical toothbrush attachments, 2 identical jet attachments that can be used for daily care and distributed among different family members thanks to the multi-colored rings at the base, 1 nasal nozzle for rinsing the nose, 1 for cleaning the tongue, 1 orthodontic with bristles, which are suitable for caring for braces, 1 periodontal with a soft tip for cleaning gum pockets.

Instructions

The instruction manual is a glossy, pocket-sized accordion brochure. It is only 11 pages.

When you first read the instructions, they seemed simply and clearly structured, but later it became obvious that they were incorrectly related to the given device model.

The first note relates to the packaging section: the description and schematic diagram indicate a Micro-USB cable, while in fact the device is equipped with a USB Type-C connector. Also missing from the schematically depicted and labeled attachments are toothbrushes and a nasal attachment. In the section describing the functions of the attachments, there are also no instructions for using these two types of attachments. An extremely strange and critical error is the prohibition in the safety section on the use of an irrigator for rinsing the nose, despite the presence of a nasal nozzle. This raises questions about how to properly use this attachment without compromising your health and warranty.

Despite these errors, the instructions as a whole are convenient, understandable and informative where necessary, which allows you to quickly start using the device. The text contains many warnings about the importance of using only “original” attachments with the device and the need to contact an authorized Felfri service center in case of any problems, otherwise this may lead to loss of warranty.

Control

Turning on/off a device connected to the power supply occurs in three stages:

  • start of work by pressing the power button on the left
  • selecting the operating mode using the button on the right (the weakest mode is initially selected)
  • changing the position of the slider on the handle

You can switch modes directly during use, increasing or decreasing the water pressure. To do this you need to use the right button.

To start the device with the already selected mode from 1 to 6, you need to remove the magnetized handle from the body and set the slider located on the handle to the upper position. There are two positions in total: “On.” top and «Off» below.

It is worth considering that the device automatically turns off 2 minutes after starting operation, and if after this time you forget to switch the slider to the “Off” position, then the next time you turn it on you risk splashing yourself.

The top button on the handle of the irrigator allows you to remove the installed jet nozzle. And the ribbed ring located above the button allows you to adjust the direction of the nozzle (rotates 360°).

Exploitation

Before use, you must remove the packaging material and read the instructions. When installing the irrigator, make sure it is installed on a flat, dry surface. Fill the tank with clean water at a temperature not exceeding 40°C and install it in the socket, making sure that the rubber gasket of the tank fits snugly against the gasket of the base of the device. After this, install the replacement nozzle on the irrigator handle — turning on the device without the nozzle is prohibited. After completing all these steps, you can connect the device to the network and turn it on.

The manufacturer prohibits the use of iodine, saline solutions and insoluble concentrated essential oils in the device. If you have hard water coming from your tap, it is recommended to use filtered water.

We tested each operating mode and noted that the water pressure starting from the weakest mode can hardly be called soft. For many users, the first mode may be sufficient. To smoothly get used to stronger water pressure, it is recommended to use the irrigator regularly for several weeks. Otherwise, unprepared gums and sensitive teeth may experience significant discomfort.

The unit is easy to assemble and fills with water in seconds with no fuss — this involves removing the lid from the tank, filling with water, closing the lid (or placing the tank on the base), selecting and installing the nozzle, and then starting use after adjusting the water pressure and stream direction.

Water consumption in the tank and cleaning time depend on the selected irrigation mode. These data are presented in the table in the «Our Measurements» section.

The irrigator automatically turns off after 2 minutes of operation. To turn it on again, you need to press the power button. To avoid splashing the next time you use it, be sure to set the knob slider to the «Off» position. If you turned on the irrigator with the button, but did not move the knob to the “On” position, then after 10 seconds of operation without load, the device will automatically turn off, emitting a sound signal.

Overall, my experience with the Felfri HF-7C was positive. The absence of a wire allows you to install the device in any convenient place, not just in the kitchen, freeing you from dependence on an outlet. Using an irrigator leaves a feeling of freshness and cleanliness in the mouth that lasts for a long time after use, even longer than after regular teeth brushing. The device does an excellent job of cleaning hard-to-reach places, and the choice of different modes

Care

After each use of the irrigator, the tank should be emptied of any remaining water, and once a week it is recommended to rinse the tank with warm water at a temperature not exceeding 50°C. Also, after using the attachments, it is recommended to rinse them with warm running water. If necessary, you can use a soft cloth and soap to clean them.

The manufacturer indicates the service life of one nozzle is 6 months, after which it is recommended to replace it with a new original nozzle.

It is possible to disinfect nozzles by immersing them for 5-10 minutes in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution or 1% chlorhexidine solution.

When cleaning all components of the device, do not use organic solvents or abrasive materials, or objects with sharp edges. The irrigator is not dishwasher safe.

Our measurements

We rate the noise emitted during operation of the device as average — from 66 dBA when the nozzle is immersed in the mouth at minimum mode and up to 76 dBA with the mouth open at maximum water pressure mode. It’s not even the motor that makes the most noise, but the jet hitting the surface.

Electricity consumption during charging turned out to be insignificant — 4.4-5 W. The maximum energy consumption recorded by the wattmeter was 9 W. For 5 hours (full charge), power consumption was only 0.019 kWh.

A full tank holds up to 434 ml of water (which is slightly higher than the maximum volume stated by the manufacturer). The graduation on the tank also does not coincide with reality, but this is no longer in favor of the irrigator: the marks of 100, 200, 300 and 400 ml actually correspond to 86, 182, 293 and 386 ml.

Water consumption depends on the operating mode. In the table below we present the results of our measurements:

Operating modeOperating time with full tank, min:secWater consumption, ml/min
11:26293
21:20315
31:18323
41:14340
51:09365
61:06381

The auto shut-off function works after exactly 2 minutes.

Conclusions

To summarize, it can be noted that a portable irrigator with this shape and configuration is ideal for married couples who prefer regular and high-quality oral care at home. A tank with a capacity of 420 ml is enough to carry out a full cleaning cycle, and the presence of eight nozzles included (with the exception of the nasal one) will satisfy the needs of both one user and several family members.

We liked that the irrigator has several water pressure modes, and the slider on the handle allows you to pause the water supply if discomfort occurs and adjust the mode. These features may be important when used by children, the elderly and for bleeding gums.

We still have questions for the manufacturer regarding the instructions and cannot confidently recommend the use of a nasal attachment, as there are conflicting instructions in the brochure. We hope Felfri will correct this misunderstanding and update its printed materials with up-to-date information.

Pros:

  • 6 operating modes
  • long battery life
  • long hose

Minuses:

  • After the device automatically turns off, you may forget to switch the slider to the “Off” position. and splash the next time you use it
  • The water tank is not fixed to the engine block
  • errors and irrelevant information in the instructions
